Phenacetin (C10H13NO2, Mr = 179.2 g/mol) exists as a white crystalline powder that is sparingly soluble in water.

Effects

Phenacetin has analgesic and antipyretic properties.

Indications

For the treatment of pain and fever of various causes.

Adverse effects

  • Skin diseases
  • Blood count disorders
  • Methemoglobinemia, hemolytic anemia
  • Renal damage, renal insufficiency, especially with prolonged use.
  • Headache
