Prevention of vitreous detachment

Preventing vitreous detachment is a similar attempt to prevent the body from aging in general. Of course, it is always advisable to follow a healthy lifestyle. This includes eating a balanced and varied diet, avoiding fast food products as far as possible, taking regular exercise and drinking enough every day (1.5 to 2 liters a day are recommended).

All this helps to keep the body fit and healthy for as long as possible and to postpone the natural aging processes as far as possible. Injuries to the face and eye area or eye surgery can also increase the likelihood of vitreous detachment. Heavily short-sighted people are more susceptible to vitreous detachment due to their anatomical conditions, and therefore it may be advisable to have the condition of the eyes and the eye fundus checked regularly by an ophthalmologist.

Patients with known autoimmune diseases, diabetes, high blood lipid levels and high blood pressure are also more often affected by vitreous detachment. In these cases, it is therefore recommended to deal with the disease consciously and to be in regular contact with the treating physicians in order to be able to recognize and treat the consequences of a vitreous detachment in time. In addition to the classic causes of a vitreous detachment, where the natural processes of aging and degradation are the first to be mentioned, other factors also play a role.

A major risk factor is, of course, injuries to the face and especially the eyes, as well as surgical interventions in this area. But even constant stress to which a patient is exposed is not without consequences. Due to the constant tension in the body, blood pressure levels rise and the body releases the stress hormone cortisone, which also has an influence on the chemical composition of the blood and tissue, making it more susceptible to disease in the long term.

This leads to changes in the composition of the vitreous body and the breakdown of the hyaluronan grids may be promoted under certain circumstances. This can lead to the development of vitreous detachment. Not to be neglected, however, are chronic medication and drug abuse, which also put the body under stress and can have the same consequences.
