The following symptoms and complaints may indicate proctitis (rectal inflammation):
Main symptoms
- Anorectal pain (in the left lower abdomen).
- Dull pain symptomatology
- Continuous pain that increases before defecation and decreases afterwards
- Bloody side stool admixtures
- Watery, partly bloody discharge/mucus
- Tenesmus (constant painful urge to defecate), even when there is no stool.
- Pruritus ani (anal itching)
- Reddened anus
- Feelings of soreness
- Feeling of incomplete defecation (bowel evacuation).
Secondary symptoms
- Flatulence (bloating) – the function of the sphincter may be impaired.
- Constipation (constipation)
- Pain in the hip and groin region.
- Fecal incontinence (inability to retain stool).
