Prognosis

A stinky nose is unfortunately not completely curable in most cases. Nevertheless, the symptoms and thus the unpleasant odor can be effectively reduced by some measures. As has already been shown in the previous sections, the occurrence of a stinky nose is largely due to the drying of the nasal mucous membrane and its thus lost protective function.

The aim of symptomatic therapy must therefore be to keep the nose moist. Especially in the winter months, dry room air must be avoided.Small water bowls on the radiators can help by evaporation and improve the room climate. Those affected should also make sure that they have a sufficient supply of liquid.

At least two liters of water or unsweetened drinks is the recommendation for a healthy adult. Various nasal ointments are available in the pharmacy to keep the mucous membrane milieu moist. Inhalation solutions containing common salt support the self-cleaning function of the nose.

A professional nose cleaning should be carried out at regular intervals by an ENT physician to remove deposits and encrustations. All these measures, if applied with discipline, help to reduce the symptoms of a stinky nose. Although the disease can be effectively prevented from progressing, it cannot be completely cured.
