Propanol (Propan-1-Ol)

Propanol is available in pharmacies and drugstores. It is also known as propyl alcohol. The systematic name is propan-1-ol. Propanol should not be confused with the isomer isopropanol (propan-2-ol).

Structure and properties

Propanol (C3H8O, Mr = 60.1 g/mol) is a primary and linear alcohol. Formally, it is propane with a hydroxyl group at position 1. Propanol exists as a clear, colorless liquid with a “medicinal” odor of ethanol and is miscible with water. The boiling temperature is about 96°C.

Applications

  • Propan-1-ol and propan-2-ol are contained in numerous disinfectants, for example, for surface and skin disinfection.
  • As a reagent and as a solvent.
  • For chemical syntheses.

Adverse effects

Propanol and its vapors are flammable and has irritant and corrosive properties. Propanol may cause severe eye damage on contact, as well as drowsiness and dizziness The appropriate precautions in the safety data sheet must be observed.
