Psycho-epsychosomatic causes

One of the psychological causes of swallowing disorders is the so-called phagophobia, which is a characteristic fear of swallowing, often triggered by previous, violent swallowing and favored by already existing other anxiety disorders. This anxiety state leads to eating disorders and/or even weight loss by avoiding swallowing solid or liquid food. One of the most common psychosomatic causes is the globe syndrome, which is a somatoform disorder characterized by the feeling of having a lump in the throat that hinders swallowing and breathing.

Often these patients also stand out due to a constant compulsion to clear their throat. This disorder is not based on an organic disease, so the search for a physical cause is usually unsuccessful.
