Pyridoxine (vitamin B6) is contained in numerous medicines and dietary supplements and is commercially available, for example, in the form of tablets, effervescent tablets, lozenges and as juice. Many products are combination preparations with other vitamins, minerals and trace elements. Monopreparations include Burgerstein vitamin B6, Benadon and vitamin B6 Streuli.
Structure and properties
Pyridoxine or vitamin B6 is usually present in drugs as pyridoxine hydrochloride (C8H12ClNO3, Mr = 205.6 g/mol), a white crystalline powder that is readily soluble in water. Pyridoxine is a prodrug that is biotransformed in the organism to the active pyridoxal phosphate (PLP, pyridoxal 5′-phosphate).
Effects
Pyridoxine (ATC A11HA02), in its active form PLP, is a cofactor of numerous enzymes that play important roles in amino acid, lipid, and carbohydrate metabolism, among others.
