Rabies Vaccination (Active Immunization)

Rabies vaccine is commercially available as a solution for injection (Rabipur, Rabies Vaccine Mérieux). This article refers to active immunization.

Structure and properties

The vaccine contains inactivated rabies virus of the Flury LEP or WISTAR PM/WI 38-1503-3M strain.

Effects

Rabies vaccine (ATC J07BG01) results in the formation of neutralizing antibodies and thus immunity to rabies virus.

Indications

For pre- and postexposure prophylaxis of rabies as recommended by the National Immunization Schedule.

Dosage

According to the SmPC. The vaccine is administered intramuscularly. Multiple injections are needed on different days.

Contraindications

The vaccine is contraindicated in hypersensitivity and acute febrile illness (except postexposure prophylaxis!). For complete precautions, see the drug label.

Interactions

Immunosuppressants may limit vaccine efficacy.

Adverse effects

The most common possible adverse effects include pain and other reactions at the injection site, muscle and joint pain, skin rash, headache, lymph node swelling, flu-like symptoms, nausea, and abdominal pain.
