Radiation Sickness: Secondary Diseases

The following are the most important diseases or complications that may be contributed to by radiation sickness:

Eyes and eye appendages (H00-H59).

Blood, blood-forming organs – immune system (D50-D90).

Skin and subcutaneous (L00-L99).

  • Skin atrophy – thinning of the skin.
  • Skin fibrosis – connective tissue proliferation with thickening of the skin.
  • Pigmentation change

Cardiovascular system (I00-I99)

  • Cardiovascular failure

Infectious and parasitic diseases (A00-B99).

  • Sepsis (blood poisoning)

Neoplasms – tumor diseases (C00-D48)

Mouth, esophagus (food pipe), stomach, and intestine (K00-K67; K90-K93).

  • Diarrhea (diarrhea)
  • Fluid loss with accompanying electrolyte shifts.

Psyche – nervous system (F00-F99; G00-G99)

  • Apathy
  • Disorientation
  • Coma
  • Convulsions
  • Seizures
  • Paralysis
  • Neurogenic shock

Symptoms and abnormal clinical and laboratory findings, not elsewhere classified (R00-R99).

  • Anorexia (loss of appetite).
  • Weight loss
  • Nausea (nausea) and vomiting
  • Fever
  • Hemorrhages (bleeding)
  • Vertigo (dizziness)
