Reading Glasses: Applications & Health Benefits

Glasses are a visual aid that consists of a frame and two individual lenses. With the help of glasses or reading glasses, a certain refractive error such as farsightedness, shortsightedness or astigmatism can be corrected in a simple way.

What are reading glasses?

Reading glasses are mostly used to correct presbyopia. However, more and more young people also use reading glasses. In addition to the balancing functions, an optimal pair of reading glasses should necessarily fulfill other important characteristics. They must always fit well and not slip constantly. Reading glasses should also be very stable and, especially for children (children’s glasses / sports glasses), withstand the sporting activities well. Furthermore, the fashion aspect plays a serious role. Reading glasses are not only a necessity to see the whole environment in all sharpness, but also a trendy accessory that reflects a certain aesthetic and stylishly underlines the character of the owner. Depending on how the visual defects show up, they are compensated with different types of reading glasses. If someone is farsighted, rod-sighted or nearsighted, distance glasses are fitted. The lenses are fitted with a converging lens for farsightedness, with a diverging lens for nearsightedness, and with astigmatism, a cylindrical lens is used.

Shapes, types and styles

The ability to accommodate decreases and it is called presbyopia or “presbyopia”. This is a gradual process, which remains unnoticed for the time being. At some point, however, reading becomes strenuous because the eye muscles are always extremely tense. Fortunately, this presbyopia can be compensated by means of reading glasses. Here we are talking about “single vision glasses”, which are only designed for a certain distance, which is usually about 30 centimeters. However, reading glasses are needed exclusively for reading. As a result, two different types of frames have been favored:

On the one hand, the “half-glasses”, where the upper half of the glasses is cut off, so to speak. This model can be worn permanently, as it does not distort the view straight ahead. On the other hand, the “full glasses”, which usually have to be taken off completely if they are no longer needed for reading. Since it is therefore misplaced or lost more often than not, users wear this form of reading glasses on an eyeglass strap, which is worn in trendy designs similar to a fashionable necklace.

Structure, function and mode of operation

The shape of reading glasses can vary greatly in the shape and material of the lenses and the frame/frame. It is also customized and made to match the user’s wishes as much as possible. The lenses are also shaped in such a way that the visual defect or defective vision is optimally compensated. The refractive errors include farsightedness, nearsightedness, astigmatism and presbyopia. Most refractive errors are caused by certain deviations in the length and shape of the eye. In the case of farsightedness, the affected person sees the near area blurred, in the case of nearsightedness the distant objects blurred, and in the case of astigmatism the objects are always seen distorted in the shape of a rod and blurred. Presbyopia is a separate form of farsightedness, in which the lens of the eye becomes steadily less flexible, so that accommodation (adjustment of focus) for the near range is no longer possible. For these visual deficiencies, reading glasses provide the optimal services.

Medical and health benefits

Reading glasses are a very great relief for those affected by the various visual impairments. In addition to the improved vision and thus quality of life disappear in quite a few wearers of glasses even unexplained headaches, because they were triggered by an immense overload of the optic nerve. By means of individually adjusted glasses, it is also possible to operate various machines without errors or danger. In addition, an optimal pair of glasses ensures eye-friendly work at the computer and thus also avoids absenteeism at the workplace. A professional eye test can help to detect any visual weaknesses at an early stage. If the glasses are already worn when the first signs of one of the above-mentioned defective views are diagnosed, the eyesight can be preserved for several years longer. Also wearers of reading glasses should renew their eye test regularly, because the detected glass strength may well change.
