Regulation of the dopamine level

If dopamine levels are too low, dopamine or the precursor L-DOPA can be given as a drug. In the case of disorders caused by a too high dopamine level, so-called dopamine antagonists can be used. These dock at the same docking sites (receptors) as dopamine in order to exert its effect.

This means that dopamine can no longer dock to these sites to such a high degree and is no longer as effective. This is the mechanism of action of the neuroleptics. You can also do something yourself to keep your dopamine levels in balance by choosing a lifestyle that makes you happy and satisfied and thus helps to keep your dopamine levels at a good level. Relaxation exercises, yoga or other sports can also help.
