Chickenpox infection is treated symptomatically. There are remedies available to reduce fever and relieve itching. Ibuprofen and Paraceatmol can be used to reduce fever.

Creams with synthetic tanning agents or antihistamines can be used locally to combat itching. In immunocompromised people an antiviral therapy with Aciclovir can be considered. In case of a superinfection of the skin, antibiotics such as cefuroxime can be used.

Calf compresses are suitable as a household remedy for fever reduction. If this does not help, antipyretic drugs such as paracetamol and ibuprofen can be used for children. Cloths soaked in green tea can be applied to the skin to combat itching.

In addition to relieving the itching, these cloths are said to have an anti-inflammatory effect. Cold cloths can also help against itching. Homeopathic remedies against chickenpox are belladonna, lemon balm extract and the mother tincture of pansies. In most cases, simple household remedies that alleviate the symptoms of chickenpox are already effective. These most important symptoms are first and foremost the relief of severe itching and the lowering of high fever.

Chickenpox during pregnancy

An initial infection with chickenpox during pregnancy can have consequences for the unborn child. An infection between the 13th and 20th week of pregnancy can lead to fetal varicella syndrome. This can lead to malformations and skin changes in the newborn.

In case of an infection shortly before birth, connatal varicella syndrome may occur. This can lead to severe blood poisoning of the newborn and can be fatal. Because of this risk in pregnancy, the woman’s immune status should be checked before pregnancy occurs, if possible. If there are no antibodies due to a previous infection or vaccination, a basic immunization should be given by two vaccinations before pregnancy occurs. Vaccination during pregnancy should not be carried out.
