Risk groups and prophylaxis
There are several factors that promote the development of cartilage damage in the hip joint. Among these are groups of people who, for professional, sporting or anatomical reasons, place extraordinary strain on the hip joint. Persons are also at risk if they participate in activities where injuries to the hip joint from outside cannot be ruled out.
Cartilage damage to the hip joint can be successfully avoided in many cases by treating the joint gently. This includes avoiding stressful movements in leisure time as well as at work, and reducing one’s own body weight in such a way that the mechanical load on the joint is reduced. It may also be necessary to refrain from particularly stressful sports if cartilage damage to the hip joint becomes known and there is pain in this region. In any case, it is advisable to consult the doctor treating the patient and explain the problem to him, so that consequential damage to the cartilage can be avoided.
