The type of therapy depends on the cause and must be carried out according to the stage.
Conventional nonsurgical therapy methods
- Analgesics (painkillers)
- If necessary, puncture of the shoulder joint (for relief) or installation of local anesthetics (painkillers for local anesthesia) and / or steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (cortisone).
Surgical therapy
- If conservative therapeutic influence is insufficient: surgical therapy depending on the nature of the disease.
Note: According to one study, scapula surgery (arthroscopic sub-acromial decompression) for subacromial shoulder pain (CSAW) has no clinically significant advantage over no treatment. Conclusion: only after months of unsuccessful conservative therapy should surgery be discussed in such cases.
Nutritional Medicine
- Nutritional counseling based on nutritional analysis
- Nutritional recommendations according to a mixed diet taking into account the disease at hand. This means, among other things:

- High-fiber diet (whole grains, vegetables).
- Observance of the following special dietary recommendations:
- Diet rich in:
- Omega-3 fatty acids (eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) – at least once or twice a week fresh sea fish, i.e. fatty sea fish such as salmon, herring, mackerel).
- Diet rich in:
- Selection of appropriate food based on the nutritional analysis
- See also under “Therapy with micronutrients (vital substances)” – if necessary, taking a suitable dietary supplement.

Physical therapy (including physiotherapy)

Complementary treatment methods
- Acupuncture – for pain management
- Manual trigger point therapy (manual compression of the trigger point(s); similar to deep-stroking massage) – for myofascial shoulder pain.
