Side effects
Common side effects that occur when taking levodopa are These adverse drug reactions can be reduced by combining levodopa with decarboxylase inhibitors. If a long-term therapy with levodopa is carried out, there are often fluctuations in the effectiveness and disturbances in the course of movement. The most extreme form of this is the on-off phenomenon, where alternating phases of good mobility and complete rigidity occur.
This is attributed to a presumably not constant extracellular dopamine concentration in the basal cells. Reatard tablets or the combination of levodopa with dopamine antagonists can reduce these fluctuations in action.
