Side effects | Talcid®

Side effects

In addition to the desired effects of the drug Talcid®, undesirable effects and thus side effects may also occur under certain circumstances. These include the following with Talcid®: If side effects are observed, the treating physician must be consulted, who can then adjust the dose of the drug Talcid® accordingly.

  • Diarrhea, vomiting, increased stool frequency
  • Lowered phosphorus level in blood serum
  • Elevated blood magnesium level (hypermagnesemia)
  • Allergic reactions to any of the ingredients
  • Aluminum accumulation, if renal function was previously restricted (resulting osteomalacia, encephalopathy)

Interactions with other drugs

If other drugs are taken in parallel with Talcid®, this can lead to interactions between the drugs, which can cause certain symptoms and, under certain circumstances, cause severe damage to the body of the person affected. The following are some of the drugs for which such an interaction has already been observed: In general, it is important that when taking other medications, the interval between the intake of Talcid® is at least 1-2 hours in order to keep possible interactions as small as possible. Particularly when Talcid® is taken at the same time as acidic drinks such as fruit juices or wine, there may be an unintended increase in the absorption of aluminum from the drug from the intestine into the bloodstream.Similarly, dissolved effervescent tablets should not be used to take medication, as they also contain acid agents and can therefore increase the absorption of aluminum.

  • Drugs to stiffen the heart (e.g. glycosides)
  • Drugs against bacterial infections (various antibiotics)
  • Medicinal products for gastrointestinal complaints (H1-receptor blocker)
  • Drugs for blood thinning (coumarin derivatives e.g. Marcumar)
  • Sodium fluoride
  • Chenodesoxycholate
  • Salicylate
  • Quinidine

Special instructions for use

Talcid® should not be used for more than 14 days, as existing pain can have serious causes that require medical treatment and for which therapy with Talcid® is not sufficient. If tarry stools (black stool), blood in the stool or vomiting with blood occurs, a doctor must be consulted immediately, as this can also be a sign of a serious illness. If the patient has impaired kidney function or even has to undergo hemodialysis regularly, has Alzheimer’s disease or other forms of dementia, has a low phosphate level or must follow a low phosphate diet, Talcid® must not be taken in high doses or over the long term. If this restriction is not observed, poisoning or even bone softening may occur. Treatment with Talcid® is not indicated for children under 12 years of age, as there are not enough study results available to date.
