Squamous cell carcinoma | Oral mucosa changes

Squamous cell carcinoma

Squamous cell carcinoma refers to malignant tumors of the skin and mucous membrane and is the second most common type of tumor of skin cells. In the oral cavity, it mainly affects the cheek mucous membrane, tongue or throat. The disease develops on severely damaged skin areas or chronic wounds.

Causes can be an increased mechanical irritation of certain areas of the cheek mucosa caused by badly fitting dentures, but also chemical irritation caused by constant inhalation of cigarette smoke. The therapy consists of the complete removal of the findings after a confirmed diagnosis. Since there is a frequent risk of this type of cancer spreading, the adjacent lymph nodes are very often removed as well, so that disease of the rest of the body can be prevented.

In most cases, the operation is followed by additional chemo- and/or radiotherapy, depending on the degree of the disease. The earlier the disease is detected and treated, the better the chances of recovery. If the findings are less than 2 cm, the chances of recovery are very good. However, if the tumor has already spread, the prognosis is much less favorable. As with all types of cancer, squamous cell carcinoma can be expected to take a long time to heal, and regular follow-up examinations must be carried out.

Aphtae

Aphtae are small, yellow vesicles filled with liquid, which have a red border and are usually filled with liquid. The vesicles often heal spontaneously within 10-14 days. The aphtae are divided into minor and major aphtae.

The minor aphthae have a diameter of only a few millimeters, while the major aphthae are up to 3 cm in diameter. The smaller ones remain superficial and heal spontaneously, the larger ones penetrate into the depth of the mucosa. There they can develop a deep-seated inflammation and take several weeks to heal.

This is a reversible disease, which heals on its own and leaves no or very few traces (small scars). Household remedies or mouth rinses from the pharmacy can influence the healing process and reduce the duration of the disease.Best suited are rinses with camomile tea or sprinkling the aphthae with tea tree oil. From the pharmacy, the Pyralvex mouthwash is especially helpful. With the right oral hygiene, the aphthae heal quickly and easily.
