Stomatitis: Treatment and Prevention

For the treatment of stomatitis, various remedies from the pharmacy are available. However, it should also be consciously avoided some things such as too hot food or nicotine. So that it does not even come to an inflamed oral mucosa, the first measure recommended is the thorough and regular care of the teeth and the oral cavity. How else you can prevent stomatitis, read here.

Treatment of stomatitis

Too hot, spicy, hard or edgy food should be avoided, avoid alcohol and nicotine.

In the pharmacy there are numerous preparations with chemical or herbal active ingredients that can be used to treat stomatitis. Suitable as a gargle solution are, for example, diluted calendula essence, sage or chamomile tea. For rubbing into the gums, you can get gum balm, for example.

For more tips on treatment, see Aphthae. For symptoms that do not improve after two weeks despite treatment, the doctor should be consulted, as well as for recurrent inflammation.

Prevention of stomatitis

The most important measure is prevention, so that stomatitis does not occur in the first place.

The focus is on proper oral hygiene, that is, all measures that keep the teeth, gums, tongue and oral mucosa healthy:

  • Regular tooth brushing and cleaning of the interdental spaces.
  • The regular checks by the dentist
  • Especially care must be taken of transitions and niches between natural and artificial teeth, as food debris and plaque can accumulate there particularly well

Risk factors, especially high-proof alcohol consumption and smoking should be avoided.

Avoid stomatitis with dentures

For the elderly, dentures must be cleaned regularly twice a day. Removable dentures should be cleaned under running water with a soft toothbrush after each meal, if possible. It is also advisable to bathe them in denture cleaner once a day. In this way, germ colonization can be completely eliminated.

Visits to the dentist also remain important: The correct fit of the denture should be checked every six months and corrected if necessary. If pressure points are present, the dentist should be consulted immediately.

The dentist will provide further recommendations and advice on the proper care and cleaning of teeth and dentures.
