Summary
The tibia fracture is a fracture of the stronger of the two lower leg bones, which usually occurs only through extreme external force. Classical causes are car accidents, sports accidents such as twisting in a ski boot or a kick against the shin bone. Simple fractures can heal by themselves within a few months with six weeks of immobilization in a cast and subsequent active cooperation in the therapy. For more complicated fractures, surgical treatment should be considered in order to avoid protracted late effects.
