Tacalcitol is commercially available as an ointment and lotion (Curatoderm). It has been approved in many countries since 1995.
Structure and properties
Tacalcitol (C27H44O3, Mr = 416.6 g/mol) is a derivative of vitamin D3. It is lipophilic and is present in drugs as tacalcitol monohydrate.
Effects
Tacalcitol (ATC D05AX04) inhibits the proliferation of keratinocytes and promotes their differentiation. Anti-inflammatory properties have also been demonstrated.
Indications
For the external treatment of psoriasis vulgaris.
Dosage
According to the professional information. The drug is applied thinly once daily. The maximum daily doses should be observed to avoid overdose.

Interactions
Drug-drug interactions are possible with vitamin D, calcium, thiazides, and ultraviolet light. Tacalcitol should not be mixed with medicines containing salicylic acid because it will be inactivated.
Adverse effects
Possible adverse effects include local skin reactions such as itching, burning, and redness of the skin. Excessive use may result in hypercalcemia.
