Tapes

In addition to the previously mentioned therapies, taping can also be a useful therapeutic approach for an inner meniscus tear.In the meantime, taping has become an established method of treatment for inner meniscus tears, particularly in the case of sports injuries, because it fulfils the function of a functional bandage. The different colors of the tapes imply the strength, so that depending upon severity it can be variably selected, which tape is the correct one. The tape supports the knee joint through its stabilizing function without restricting stretching or bending movements.

The tape is very elastic and very comfortable to wear. It also protects against swelling in the knee joint area through light compression. In addition, the tape’s slightly massaging effect on the skin improves blood circulation.

Taping can be used both as a purely conservative treatment and as post-operative care. The choice of indication depends on the type and intensity of the complaints. In the case of a large, total tear of the inner meniscus, taping is not sufficient to cause complete healing of the inner meniscus.

However, after surgery for such a severe meniscus tear, tape dressings can positively influence the regeneration and the healing process by relieving the strain. In the case of an inner meniscus tear, conservative tape therapy can above all also contribute to pain relief. The reason for this is the fact that the stabilizing component relieves the knee joint and thus the damaged meniscus is also exposed to less pressure and frictional forces.

To achieve a good therapeutic effect it is very important to apply the tape correctly. The tape should be applied in a bent position (about 70°). In most cases, two strips are applied to the skin; one strip on the inside of the patella and the other along the outside. The kneecap should be free and not covered by the tape. The doctor treating the patient should be consulted about the exact application technique.
