Structure and properties
Taurolidine (C7H16N4O4S2, Mr = 284.4 g/mol) is a derivative of the aminosulfonic acid taurine.
Effects
Taurolidine (ATC B05CA05) is antimicrobial to bacteria, antifungal to fungi, and neutralizes endotoxins.
Indications
- For adjunctive treatment of peritonitis.
- Soft tissue and bone injuries.
- Pleural empyema (accumulation of pus within the pleura).
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity
- Terminal renal failure
- Children under 6 years

Adverse effects
Possible adverse effects include transient irritation and burning pain.
