Therapy
The most important point of the treatment of Graves’ disease is undoubtedly the administration of medication to reduce the thyroid gland function, as hyperthyroidism develops, this is done with thyrostatic drugs. These drugs inhibit the release of thyroid hormones. Treatment with medication alone is only used if the disease is in its early stages and no relapses are known.
However, radioiodine therapy or surgery must be used to completely cure the hyperthyroidism. The accompanying symptoms such as goiter or palpitations should also be treated additionally. However, since the cause is not really clarified, symptomatic therapy is applied.
Prognosis
The prognosis can be very different. In some patients there is spontaneous healing, but in significantly more patients there is a chronic course or a relapse.
