Therapy options for complaints
If paresis of the phrenic nerve is present, certain breathing exercises can be performed as a therapy against the breathing difficulties, in worse cases artificial respiration is necessary. If there is an inflammatory process behind the paresis, the inflammation can be treated with antibiotics, antivirals, cortisone or plasma separation. If the focus is on irritation of the phrenic nerve, the symptoms, such as hiccups, often disappear by themselves and can sometimes be supported by relaxation exercises.
Prognosis for complaints
Depending on the cause of the paresis or irritation of the phrenic nerve, the symptoms may become less severe or persist.
Prophylactic behavior for prevention
To counteract irritation of the phrenic nerve caused by eating too hastily, you can first try to eat more slowly. In the case of the remaining damage to the phrenic nerve, prophylaxis is difficult to implement, as the consequences cannot always be determined in advance, for example, during surgery. In order to prevent breathing difficulties after damage, it is sometimes advisable to train the remaining respiratory muscles by means of special physiotherapy.
