Tick Removal: How to Do It and What to Avoid

Remove ticks: react quickly

How do I remove a tick?

You can remove ticks by using special tick forceps from the pharmacy or pointed tweezers. Use these to grab the tick by the head, just above your skin. Hold the tick this way for about 60 seconds. Often, the ticks will then remove their clasping apparatus from the skin on their own. If this is not the case, you must actively remove the ticks:

If you do not have tweezers or tick forceps at hand, you can try to push a needle under the mouth tool of the tick. Then you can carefully lever the tick out of the skin.

After successfully removing the tick, you should clean the affected area with disinfectant. This will prevent the bite from becoming infected. If you do not have disinfectant on hand, use soap and water to rinse thoroughly.

Remove ticks: tick card

A tick card is a flat plastic card with a small indentation. Its small size makes it easy to carry around (such as when hiking). Tick cards are available in pharmacies and many drugstores.

Instead of the “ordinary” tick card, you can also buy a tick card with a magnifying glass. It has the advantage that you can use it to look closely at and recognize even very small ticks.

Whether you use tick forceps or a tick card or any other instrument to remove ticks is up to you. The important thing is that you remove the tick as quickly as possible and with great care!

This is not how you should remove ticks!
