To prevent tinnitus, attention must be paid to reducing individual risk factors.

Behavioral risk factors

  • Psychosocial situation
    • Psychological stress
    • Chronic stress

Other risk factors

  • Chronic noise exposure incl. recreational noise, e.g. portable music players (→ hearing loss).
  • Reduced noise intolerance at a young age.

Prevention factors (protective factors)

  • High caffeine consumption (600 mg caffeine ≈ 15 cups espresso) reduces the risk of tinnitus by approximately 15%.
