Tips for Everyday Life with ADHD

Dr. Barbara Alm of the ADHD in Adulthood Working Group at the Central Institute of Mental Health in Mannheim, Germany, lists some behavioral tips on how ADHD sufferers can better cope with everyday life:

  • Appointments or necessary errands should be written down immediately and use a clear appointment planner for this purpose.

  • For certain activities, you should schedule fixed times. This includes so-called rituals about for important personal areas, such as shopping or sports, on certain days and at fixed times. Sport is a very important activity for tension relief and mood stabilization.

  • It is important to plan in advance.

  • Postponing – one of the most essential ADHD problems – you should not do anything. Things you do right away make you feel much better.

  • It is important to balance work and relaxation.

  • With mood swings helps to accept them. But brooding about it does not help.

  • Important reference partners, whether in the circle of friends or at work, should be informed.

  • For successes, even small, should be rewarded.

A statement that gives courage comes from the mother of a now adult fidgety philips: “Everyone always talks about the deficits. But he has, like most ADHD sufferers also, many strengths: He can talk very well and convincingly, is open and sociable, has a great charisma with quite a lot of charm and can win other people over.”
