Valerian: Effects and Side Effects

The effect of valerian is due to its interaction with nerve cells that secrete an inhibitory messenger in the nervous system. However, despite intensive research, the drug’s efficacy-determining substance could not be clearly determined. However, on the basis of clinical studies, it has been demonstrated that positive results can be achieved in the time it takes to fall asleep and the quality of sleep due to its effect on inhibitory nerve cells.

Valerian: effect not immediate

Accordingly, when taken over several weeks, valerian effectively relieves insomnia and nervous conditions. Please note that the calming and sleep-promoting effect of valerian usually does not occur immediately, but only after about 14 days.

Treatment with valerian should be discontinued prior to surgery involving anesthesia, as it may interact with anesthetic agents.

Valerian side effects and drug interactions

When taking valerian, in very rare cases, discomfort in the gastrointestinal tract and extremely rare allergic reactions may occur. The occurrence of headaches, restlessness and disturbances in heart function are also possible.

The effect of tranquilizers or sleeping pills may be enhanced by the simultaneous use of valerian preparations. This is especially true when alcohol is taken at the same time.
