Visceral Surgery

Visceral surgery is also called abdominal surgery. Its field of work includes diseases and injuries of the internal organs, especially the esophagus, stomach, bile ducts, small and large intestine, liver and pancreas. Operations on the thyroid gland and adrenal glands also fall within the scope of visceral surgery.

For example, visceral surgeons provide surgical treatment for patients with the following conditions:

  • diseases of the rectum (e.g. hemorrhoids, fistulas, fissures)
  • benign tumors in the abdominal cavity (e.g. of the liver)
  • abdominal cancers (e.g. stomach cancer, colon cancer, liver cancer, pancreatic cancer)
  • Gallstones
  • Inflammation of the pancreas (pancreatitis)
  • Thyroid diseases (such as hyperthyroidism, tumors)
  • Hernias (hernia of the intestines, e.g. inguinal hernia, umbilical hernia)
