Visual Disorders: Therapy

Depending on the underlying condition, drug/surgical therapy may be used.

General measures

  • Briefly closing the eyes relaxes the eye muscles.
  • Occasional changes of gaze into the distance prevent eyestrain during screen work or reading.
  • When working at the computer screen should be regular breaks.
  • Intensive screen viewing (TV, computer, tablet or cell phone) delays the blink, resulting in insufficient moistening as well as eyestrain.Recommended screen distance depending on the screen size (inch/screen diagonal):
    • 15 inches / 38 cm: recommended screen distance 50 cm.
    • 17 inch / 43 cm: recommended screen distance 60 cm
    • 19 inch / 48 cm: recommended screen distance 70 cm
    • 21 inch / 53 cm: recommended screen distance 80 cm
  • Watching TV in low light or too close to the screen also strains the eye muscles.
  • Exercise in the fresh air promotes blood circulation and supply of the eye.

Depending on the degree of restriction, the following measures are available:

  • In case of limitations/loss of visual acuity:
    • Use of optical aids, electronic reading aids.
    • Orientation/mobility training
    • Braille Braille
    • Braille long stick (touch stick)
    • Guide dog for the blind
  • For color vision disorders (color vision disorder, color vision deficiency):
    • Specially coated glasses
