Trigger factors for MS

Trigger factors are events or circumstances that can cause a worsening of the disease state and thus have a negative influence on the course of the disease. In multiple sclerosis, such deteriorations become visible as relapses. Infectious diseases are a very important factor.

If an MS patient falls ill with influenza or gastrointestinal disease, the immediate consequence can be a relapse. Although pregnancy is a protective factor, the risk of relapses is increased in the first three months after the birth of the child. Whether the psychological condition of the patient has an influence on the likelihood of a relapse is still under discussion. There seems to be a connection, this is being investigated in current studies.
