Splenomegaly (Enlargement of the Spleen): Diagnostic Tests

Obligatory medical device diagnostics.

  • Abdominal ultrasonography (ultrasound examination of abdominal organs) – for basic diagnosis.
  • Electrocardiogram (ECG; recording of the electrical activity of the heart muscle) – for suspected cardiac involvement.

Optional medical device diagnostics – depending on the results of the history, physical examination and obligatory laboratory parameters – for differential diagnostic clarification.

  • Computed tomography (CT) of the abdomen (abdominal CT) – to determine the exact extent; for staging if malignancy is suspected.
  • Magnetic resonance imaging of the abdomen (abdominal MRI) – to determine the exact dimensions; for staging if malignancies are suspected.
  • Sonography-guided trial excision – especially when malignant lymphoma is suspected.
  • Scintigraphy – when neoplasms are suspected.
