Dependence on nasal spray | Nasic®

Dependence on nasal spray

If Nasic® is used longer than recommended (maximum one week at a time), an addiction to the nasal spray can easily develop. There is a permanent swelling of the nasal mucosa with blocked breathing through the nose. Only by using Nasic® again can short-term relief be provided and breathing made easier.

This dependency can only be treated by withdrawal, which initially leads to more severely obstructed nasal breathing. It can be tried to use seawater nasal spray as a support during this phase. It is essential to ensure that this does not contain the active ingredient of Nasic® (xylometazoline hydrochloride), as this is responsible for the dependency. Anyone who is not able to free themselves from the addiction to Nasic® on their own should seek the support of their family doctor as soon as possible.

Contraindications

Nasic® Nasal Spray should not be used if you are allergic or sensitive to it. Nasic® should also not be used if you are hypersensitive to the preservative benzalkonium chloride. Nasic® is not suitable for children under six years of age.

For the little ones among us, special preparations with lower active ingredient doses are recommended. Not all colds are the same: Nasic® should not be used if the nasal mucosa is dry, as it can worsen the dryness within the nose. Another contraindication is the use of blood pressure-increasing medication, such as antidepressants from the group of monoaminooxidase inhibitors.

Due to their effects on the vascular system, together with Nasic® they can trigger unpleasant symptoms such as headaches, dizziness and even cardiac arrhythmia. The same effect also occurs in the case of previous illnesses of the cardiovascular system, such as cardiac insufficiency or high blood pressure. Here, too, the vasoconstrictive effect of Nasic® in combination with the diseases mentioned above leads to the symptoms already mentioned. If you are known to have hyperthyroidism, diabetes mellitus, enlargement of the prostate or a tumor of the adrenal gland, you should not use Nasic® without consulting your doctor.

This can result in a worsening of the symptoms of the respective clinical pictures. Even in the case of an increased intraocular pressure, the glaucoma, Nasic® can negatively influence the disease and lead to a deterioration of vision. If there are signs of a chronic, i.e. permanent cold, you should not use Nasic® for a long time. There is a risk of nasal mucous membrane loss. In extreme cases, the image of the so-called stinky nose can be caused, where the reduced blood and nutrient supply to the mucous membrane causes it to die.
