Talcid®

Talcid® is a drug for binding excess gastric acid and thus belongs to the antacid drug group. It is therefore used when the symptomatic treatment of diseases is to be carried out by binding gastric acid. This is the case with gastric and duodenal ulcers (Ulcus ventriculi and Ulcus duodeni), as well as heartburn and acid-related stomach complaints. If a stomach or duodenal ulcer is suspected, an examination for H. pylori should be carried out, and after detection of the pathogen, appropriate therapy should be administered so that the ulcer disease can heal.

Contraindications/ Contraindications

Talcid® should not be used if one or more of the following impairments are present, as otherwise there is a risk of serious damage from therapy with the drug

  • Hypersensitivity/allergy to hydrotalcite
  • Hypersensitivity/allergy to peppermint oil
  • Hypersensitivity/allergy to any of the other ingredients of Talcid®.
  • Restricted kidney function
  • Low blood phosphate level (hypophosphoremia)

Instructions for use

The drug Talcid® should be taken exactly as directed. If there are any uncertainties or queries, the doctor or pharmacist should be consulted. The usual dose, unless otherwise prescribed, is: Adults, as well as adolescents from 12 years of age and older, take 1-2 chewable tablets several times a day as required, but observe a maximum daily dose of 12 chewable tablets (i.e. a maximum of 6000mg hydrotalcide per day).

The drug is used between meals and before bedtime and the duration depends on the underlying disease and its severity. If the symptoms do not noticeably decrease when taking Talcid® for two weeks, the patient must consult a doctor again. Even if the effect seems too weak or too strong, the doctor in charge should be consulted and the dose of Talcid® should never be changed independently!

If larger quantities of the drug were taken than intended, more frequent visits to the toilet with softer stools may occur. In general, no special measures are necessary in case of overdose, as poisoning due to too high drug levels is unlikely due to lower absorption of the drug components. If an intake has been forgotten, do not take double the amount, but continue the treatment in the normal scheme nevertheless.

Under no circumstances should the treatment be stopped on your own, but should be discussed in advance with the treating doctor! The drug Talcid® is available in the form of chewable tablets that are easy to buy and can be rinsed down with a little liquid afterwards. If other drugs are also taken, they should always be taken 1-2 hours before or after taking Talcit.
