Therapy of chickenpox

Synonyms in the broadest sense

Varicella infection

Therapy

Patients whose immune system is weakened and newborns are particularly at risk from a varicella infection and its possible consequences. In these patients, as well as in patients with severe forms of the infectious disease with pneumonia or very painful courses of zoster (shingles), antiviral therapy with acyclovir (e.g. Zovirax®) can be administered. Mild forms of chickenpox can be treated symptomatically, i.e. with anti-itching measures and fingernail care (cutting fingernails short and frequent hand washing) so that the blisters are not scratched open and become bacterially infected. If a bacterial superinfection of the blisters occurs, treatment with antibiotics may be necessary.

What can be done about the itching of chickenpox?

To combat itching, cloths soaked in green tea can be placed on the skin. In addition to relieving the itching, these cloths are said to have an anti-inflammatory effect. In general, cold helps against itching, so that the skin can also be cooled with cool cloths.

Envelopes with synthetic tanning agents can also alleviate itching. If the itching cannot be stopped, antihistamines can be used. These are taken orally and should lead to a rapid improvement in symptoms.

If the pustules that develop with chickenpox are scratched open, scarring can occur. In case of open skin areas, superinfection with bacteria can occur. To avoid this, care should be taken that the skin is not scratched with blood.

In case of a bacterial superinfection, antibiotic therapy should be used. It is also possible to develop a different mechanism instead of scratching the skin with your fingers, which is gentle on the skin. In this case, an attempt can be made to stroke over the affected areas of skin with the smooth hand.

Homeopathic treatment of chickenpox

Chickenpox usually does not require treatment and heals spontaneously after about five to seven days. The homeopathic remedies available are belladonna, lemon balm extract and the mother tincture from the stepmother’s medicine. In most cases, however, skin products that alleviate the symptoms of chickenpox are helpful. These most important symptoms are primarily the relief of severe itching and the reduction of high fever.
