Somatoform Disorders: Medical History

Medical history (history of illness) represents an important component in the diagnosis of somatoform disorders.

Family history

  • Are there frequent mental health problems in your family?

Social history

  • Do you feel comfortable in your family, in your job?
  • What is your profession?
  • Is there any evidence of psychosocial stress or strain due to your family situation?
  • How do the complaints affect your daily life?
  • Do you often feel anxious, depressed or tense?
  • Have you ever had thoughts of being tired of life?
  • Do you sleep well?
  • What are your hobbies?

Current medical history/systemic history (somatic and psychological complaints).

  • What symptoms have you noticed?
  • How long have they been occurring?
  • In what frequency do they occur?
  • What triggers these symptoms?
  • What do you do to stop the symptomatology?
  • When was the last time you saw a doctor?
  • What examinations and therapies have already been performed?
  • Do you agree with the diagnoses of your doctors?
  • Have you ever applied for a pension or similar?

Vegetative anamnesis including nutritional anamnesis.

  • Do you drink alcohol? If so, what drink(s) and how many glasses per day?

Self history incl. medication history.

  • Pre-existing conditions (mental health problems)
