To prevent frostbite, attention must be paid to reducing individual risk factors.
The following factors have a predisposing effect on frostbite:
Behavioral risk factors
- Tight-fitting clothing/shoes
- Immobility
Disease-related risk factors.
Symptoms and abnormal clinical and laboratory findings not elsewhere classified (R00-R99).

The following factors predispose to hpothermia:
Biographic risk factors
- Age – elderly, newborns, children.
Behavioral risk factors
- Alcohol abuse
- Drug abuse
Disease-related risk factors
Psyche – nervous system (F00-F99; G00-G99)
- Alcohol abuse
- Drug abuse
Other risk factors
- Mountain accident
- Polytrauma – combination of multiple injuries, at least one of which, or combination of injuries, is life-threatening
- Snow accident
- Burial
- Neglect
- Water accident
