Metatarsal Pain (Metatarsalgia): Medical History

Medical history (history of illness) is an important component in the diagnosis of metatarsalgia (midfoot pain).

Family history

  • Are there frequent musculoskeletal disorders in your family?

Social history

  • What is your profession?
  • Do you often wear shoes with high heels?

Current medical history/systemic history (somatic and psychological complaints).

  • Are you experiencing pain? If yes, when does the pain occur? How long has the pain been present?
  • Where is the pain localized?
  • Is the change unilateral or bilateral?
  • Do you have any pain-related functional limitation of the affected joints?
  • Is the pain activity-dependent?
  • Was there a precipitating event? Accident? Fall?

Vegetative anamnesis incl. nutritional anamnesis.

  • Do you participate in sports? If yes, which sport discipline(s) and how often weekly?

Self history including medication history.

  • Pre-existing conditions (diseases of the musculoskeletal system).
