Pantothenic Acid (Vitamin B5): Supply Situation

Pantothenic acid was not included in the National Nutrition Survey II (2008). Regarding the intake of pantothenic acid in the German population, data exist from the 2004 Nutrition Report of the German Nutrition Society (DGE).

These data on pantothenic acid intake are based on estimates and only reflect the average intake. No statements can be made about men and women with lower intakes below the mean value. However, this does not mean that there is no undersupply of pantothenic acid in the German population.

Regarding the supply situation, it can be stated:

  • On average, the German population does not absorb the recommended intake for pantothenic acid.
  • Women take with 4.5 mg per day on average less pantothenic acid than men (5 mg).
  • Men in the age group 19-25 years lack on average 1.5 mg pantothenic acid. This corresponds to a daily shortfall of 25% of the recommended intake.
  • Women in the age group 19-25 years lack on average 2 mg pantothenic acid. This corresponds to a daily shortfall of 33% of the recommended intake.
  • Pregnant and breastfeeding women have no additional need for pantothenic acid compared to their non-pregnant or non-breastfeeding peers. However, they are subject to the same deficiency situation. Accordingly, pregnant and breastfeeding women 19-25 years lack on average 2 mg pantothenic acid per day.

Since the intake recommendations of the DGE are based on the needs of healthy and normal-weight people, an individual additional requirement (eg due todiet, stimulant consumption, long-term medication, etc.) may be above the intake recommendations of the DGE.
