Pantothenic Acid

Products

Pantothenic acid (vitamin B5) is contained in numerous multivitamin preparations, for example, in the form of tablets, capsules, effervescent tablets and as syrups. It is contained in both medicinal products and dietary supplements. Pantothenic acid is a component of the vitamin B complex.

Structure and properties

Pantothenic acid (C9H17NO5, Mr = 219.2 g/mol) is usually present in drugs in the form of the calcium salt calcium pantothenate, a white, weakly hygroscopic powder that is readily soluble in water. Dexpanthenol (panthenol) is an alcohol prodrug or provitamin of pantothenic acid (see under dexpanthenol). Only the D-enantiomer is active. Pantothenic acid contains the amino acid beta-alanine as a structural element.

Effects

Pantothenic acid (ATC A11HA31) is required in the body for the formation of coenzyme A (CoA). Coenzyme A is involved in numerous anabolic and catabolic metabolic reactions in carbohydrate, amino acid, protein, and lipid metabolism. Vitamin B5 deficiency is very rare because panothenic acid is found in virtually all natural foods (“pantothen” can be translated as everywhere).

Indications

  • For the prevention and treatment of vitamin B5 deficiency.
  • As a dietary supplement for an adequate supply of vitamin B5.

Topical use: see under dexpanthenol.

Dosage

According to the SmPC. The DACH reference value is in the low milligram range. The therapeutic dose is higher. Pantothenic acid has a wide therapeutic range.

Contraindications

The drugs are contraindicated in case of hypersensitivity.

Adverse effects

There are no known adverse effects when used as directed. Pantothenic acid has very low toxicity.
