Alprostadil is commercially available as an injectable, urethral rod, and infusion concentrate (Caverject, Muse, Prostin VR). It has been approved in many countries since 1983. An alprostadil cream is also approved in some countries.
Structure and properties
Alprostadil (C20H34O5, Mr = 354.5 g/mol) is a white to slightly yellowish crystalline powder that is practically insoluble in water.
Effects
Alprostadil (ATC C01EA01, ATC G04BE01) is a vasodilator. It relaxes the muscles in the corpus cavernosum.
Indications
For the treatment of erectile dysfunction.
