Apraclonidine

Products

Apraclonidine is commercially available in the form of eye drops (iopidine). It has been approved in many countries since 1995.

Structure and properties

Apraclonidine (C9H10Cl2N4, Mr = 245.1 g/mol) is an amino derivative of clonidine. It is present in the drug as apraclonidine hydrochloride, a white powder that is highly soluble in water.

Effects

Apraclonidine (ATC S01EA03) lowers intraocular pressure. It is an alpha-2-adrenergic agonist.

Indications

As a second-line agent for lowering intraocular pressure.

Dosage

According to the SmPC. The drops are administered three times daily into the conjunctival sac of the eye(s). See also under Administering eye drops.

Adverse effects

The most common possible adverse effects include local reactions to the eye such as itching, an uncomfortable sensation, lacrimation, eyelid edema, blurred vision, foreign body sensation, dry eye, and conjunctivitis. Other common side effects include impaired sense of taste, headache, and weakness.
