Blocked Nose (Nasal Congestion): Medical History

Medical history (history of illness) represents an important component in the diagnosis of nasal congestion.

Family history

  • What is the general health of your family members?

Social history

  • What is your profession?
  • Are you exposed to harmful working substances in your profession?

Current medical history/systemic medical history (somatic and psychological complaints).

  • How long have the complaints existed?
  • Have the complaints occurred slowly or suddenly
  • Do you also suffer from colds, coughs, eye watering, etc.?
  • Does the nose run? If so, what does the secretion look like?
  • Has your sense of smell and taste changed?
  • If child: (Wg. adenoidal nasal obstruction/nasal congestion due to adenoids/enlargement of pharyngeal tonsils):
    • Does the child possibly have hearing or speech disorders?
    • Does the child have nocturnal breathing pauses?

Vegetative anamnesis including nutritional anamnesis.

  • Do you smoke? If yes, how many cigarettes, cigars or pipes per day?

Self history including medication history.

  • Pre-existing conditions (ENT diseases)
  • Operations (on the nose or sinuses).
  • Radiotherapy
  • Vaccination status
  • Allergies
  • Environmental history
