Medical history (history of illness) represents an important component in the diagnosis of nasal congestion.
Family history
- What is the general health of your family members?
Social history
- What is your profession?
- Are you exposed to harmful working substances in your profession?
Current medical history/systemic medical history (somatic and psychological complaints).
- How long have the complaints existed?
- Have the complaints occurred slowly or suddenly
- Do you also suffer from colds, coughs, eye watering, etc.?
- Does the nose run? If so, what does the secretion look like?
- Has your sense of smell and taste changed?
- If child: (Wg. adenoidal nasal obstruction/nasal congestion due to adenoids/enlargement of pharyngeal tonsils):
- Does the child possibly have hearing or speech disorders?
- Does the child have nocturnal breathing pauses?
Vegetative anamnesis including nutritional anamnesis.
- Do you smoke? If yes, how many cigarettes, cigars or pipes per day?
Self history including medication history.
- Pre-existing conditions (ENT diseases)
- Operations (on the nose or sinuses).
- Radiotherapy
- Vaccination status
- Allergies
- Environmental history
