Cellulose acetate phthalate is used as an excipient in medicines, for example in tablets and capsules.

Structure and properties

Cellulose acetate phthalate is a partially -acetylated and -phthalylated cellulose. It exists as a white, free-flowing and hygroscopic powder or as colorless flakes and is practically insoluble in water.

Effects

The effects are due to the difference in solubility in the acidic and alkaline environments of the gastrointestinal tract.

Indications for use

As an excipient for the manufacture of enteric-coated drugs, for example for enteric-coated tablets or capsules.
