Cervical cancer therapy

There are different levels of treatment:

  • Prevention (prophylaxis)
  • Konisation
  • Uterus removal (hysterectomy)

Provision possibilities

Cancer suspected tissue changes should be cut out of the cervix in a conical shape (so-called conisation). Currently, an estimated 50,000 of these surgical procedures are performed in Germany every year. A general conisation is not necessary in every case, but a stage-dependent procedure based on the individual findings according to the current guidelines.

In more advanced stages, removal of the entire uterus (med. hysterectomy) including the connective tissue holding apparatus, a vaginal cuff and the surrounding lymph nodes is the method of choice (so-called Wertheim – radical surgery). Sometimes radiotherapy and/or chemotherapy are also required. As with any cancer disease, consistent follow-up care is important: every three months for the first three years, every four months for another two years and every six months after five years.
