Choline salicylate is commercially available in the form of oral gels only (e.g., Mundisal, Tenderdol).

Structure and properties

Choline salicylate (C12H19NO4, Mr = 241.28 g/mol) is a salt consisting of choline and salicylic acid.

Effects

Choline salicylate has analgesic and anti-inflammatory properties. It is effective during about 2-3 hours.

Indications

For the treatment of inflammation and injury of the oral mucosa, e.g., aphthae, pressure sores, sores, and teething problems.

Contraindications

Choline salicylate is contraindicated in cases of hypersensitivity. As a precaution, it should not be used in children younger than 12 years of age with viral infections (e.g., influenza, chickenpox) (Reye’s syndrome). For complete precautions, see the drug label.

Adverse effects

Oral gels may contain alcohol, which may cause a temporary burning sensation after application.
