Coffee Charcoal

Coffee charcoal is commercially available in Germany as an oral powder (Carbo Königsfeld). It is not registered as a drug in many countries.

Structure and properties

Coffee charcoal is obtained from the green, dried coffee beans of -species by roasting until charred and grinding.

Effects

Coffee charcoal (ATC A07XP) has absorbent and astringent properties.

Indications

For symptomatic treatment of nonspecific acute diarrhea.

Contraindications

Coffee charcoal is contraindicated in hypersensitivity to the green coffee bean. Refer to the drug label for complete precautions.

Interactions

Charcoal may reduce the absorption of concomitantly administered drugs and their effectiveness.

Adverse effects

No adverse effects have been reported to date. Charcoal may discolor mucous membranes and clothing black.
