Structure and properties
Colistimethate sodium is prepared from colistin by reaction with formaldehyde and sodium bisulfite. It exists as a white powder that is very soluble in water. Colistin sulfate is a mixture of polypeptide sulfates obtained from certain strains of var. or prepared by other methods. It is a white powder that is readily soluble in water.
Effects
Colistimethate (ATC J01XB01) is a cyclic polypeptide antibiotic. It is bactericidal by disrupting the structure and function of the outer membrane and cytoplasmic membrane of Gram-negative pathogens.
Indications
Inhalation:
- For intermittent aerosol therapy for respiratory tract infections caused by in patients with cystic fibrosis.
Infusion:
- As a second-line agent for the treatment of severe infections caused by multidrug-resistant aerobic Gram-negative pathogens.
