Conclusion | Therapy of myopia

Conclusion

It is up to the patient to decide which method to choose to correct his myopia. With only minor vision loss, glasses or contact lenses remain the method of choice. Especially for people who are reluctant to use such aids, a surgical intervention is recommended.

This also applies in particular to people who are so severely short-sighted that even glasses can no longer help them sufficiently. Myopia can be corrected by reducing the refractive power of the eye and thus shifting the focal point back to the retina. This is done either with glasses or contact lenses or by means of laser surgery.

Spectacle lenses/contact lenses are concave lenses (also minus lenses or diverging lenses). Contact lenses are elastic spectacle lenses that lie directly on the cornea. However, the contact lenses and the cornea must be cared for accordingly, otherwise irreversible (irreversible) damage to the cornea may occur.

In the best case of short-sightedness therapy, the weakest concave lens should be prescribed, with which one can still see best in the distance. In laser therapy, the laser is used to flatten the cornea, thus reducing the refractive power of the cornea. The operation only takes a few minutes, but it involves some risks, especially in the case of more severe myopia (from about 6 diopters, myopia can remain despite laser treatment or vision can deteriorate until complete loss of vision occurs). Therefore, this procedure is not yet recommended for severe myopia. Depending on which laser procedure is chosen, the risk is between 0.5% and 5%.
