Cost of treatment | Surgery for patellar tip syndrome

Cost of treatment

Surgery for patellar tip syndrome is very expensive. The health insurance usually covers the costs if the indication for the operation can be established. This means that the operation is only covered by health insurance if a conservative therapy attempt is unsuccessful. The same usually applies to private insurance companies. In order to obtain certainty about the assumption of the resulting costs, it is advisable to consult with the individual insurer.

Success of the treatment

As with all operations and therapies, the success of treatment cannot be guaranteed by a patellar tip syndrome operation in advance. The success of patellar tendon syndrome surgery depends not only on the disease itself but also on individual factors. However, the extent of the inflammation in particular is decisive for the success of the operation.

In the literature, surgical therapy is indicated with a success rate of 70-90%. How great the individual chances of success are can be discussed with the treating physician. In order to ensure the success of the therapy, consistent post-operative treatment of the disease is essential.

First of all, it is important to protect the affected knee with crutches. After about 3-5 days, targeted physiotherapy can be started. The doctor and physiotherapist in charge of the patient can best assess which exercises are appropriate and from when on sports activities can be started. The duration of the follow-up treatment depends on the healing process and can last between 2 and 6 months.

Prognosis

The prognosis for patellar tip syndrome is generally considered to be very good. The success rate of conservative therapy is over 80%. Surgical treatment of the syndrome, which is usually applied after the failure of a conservative therapy, is about 70-90%. It should be noted, however, that a long follow-up treatment is necessary and a start of sports activities can only take place after a longer period of time and at a lower level.
